Horizon is uniquely designed to provide transportation for non-emergency patients who require skilled drivers and equipment to accommodate wheelchairs, stretchers, IV lines, peg tubes, ostomy devices, orthopedic appliances, and similar medical equipment.
The Process
When a transport is requested, most often from a hospital or other medical facility, our initial consultation involves assessing the patient's underlying diagnosis and requirements for the ride. Our schedulers are trained physical therapists who understand the medical complexities in safely moving a patient.
We determine what kind of equipment might be needed to make the ride not only safe, but comfortable for the patient. We make a point of learning whether the patient requires any specific pharmaceutical remedies for the ride, such as medication for pain or anxiety. We also determine whether the patient is cognitive enough to ride alone with the driver, or whether someone else is needed to go along. When appropriate, we additionally verify destination appointment times.
We don't leave family members out of the process, either. Once the patient's schedule is determined, we call the appropriate family member to make sure he or she is fully informed. We take that extra step because no matter how routine a transport may be to the medical professionals who work daily with dozens of patients, we understand that for the patients themselves — and their families — being moved may be unsettling. We believe they should enjoy the same courtesies, dignity and compassion that we would want for our own loved ones. Indeed, we're so committed to that principle that family members may ride along with patients at no additional charge.
Finally, when a transport is complete, we make a follow-up call to the appropriate party to make sure our high standards were met.
Availability
Horizon Transport Services is available every minute of every day, all year long. Most often, our service is requested by medical professionals, such as those affiliated with hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and doctors' offices. However, we also welcome calls from individuals who might, for example, need to get a loved one from home to a doctor's office for an appointment.
The Cost
Patient transports are arranged based on a flat fee, plus a nominal per-mile charge is assessed. Of course, we also negotiate variable prices for patients who require daily service, or transportation more than three times a week.
Horizon accepts all major credit cards, checks and cash.
